The pipe is limited to 24/96 because of the throughput limit of the ADuM4160 but I play Red Book or equivalent music files almost all the time. Altogether kicked the crap out of a high quality $1k USB to S/PDIF reclocker from just a few years ago. Both current cheap Chinese hardware supplied with a small linear PSU and connected by very good quality interconnects.

I’m currently using an inexpensive ADuM4160 USB isolation board made specifically for audio USB with an emphasis on a clean power circuit and an inexpensive CM6631A based async USB to S/PDIF converter in a PC based music system. It allows the hardware in the digital signal path to perform much better. It’s been my experience that the bigger issue is indeed about isolating noise from the digital signal path.

There is another problem with many current DAC implementations that I could mention here, but would prefer to give to someone who can use and patent the solution.

If you are really lucky, you can set it up so that its output is OK (its line drivers are not that great, despite all its marketing hype about how great they are), but nonetheless if I optically isolate and reclock USB audio into my 15 YO high end DAC that does not attempt to reclock its input but has a really good line driver, it outperforms it by no small margin. I have a USB DAC made by a company (beginning with A) that is absolutely terrible at this. Digital inputs can carry noise that at some point in the circuitry has to be electrically isolated rather than simply filtered.

RECLOCK ENABLE BITPERFECT AUDIO CODE

One problem is that executing code in a processor chip generates digital noise that can influence the output depending upon the code path taken. I had to implement this in various forms for several communication projects in the past (power, military, and nuclear industries) and encountered unique problems each time that improved my understanding.

We’re getting even closer with our project.īut I wouldn’t hold my breath. And if it becomes a reality, everything we think we know changes. So the question becomes can we eliminate those differences? Our long term research project suggests yes. Same letter, very different experience in receiving it. The letter is identical, the speed it gets delivered varies as does the amount of hassle getting it. Think of it like this: I send an identical letter to someone through the post office, UPS, FedEx and DHL. Their timing is different, their associated noise levels are different and, clearly, they sound different. Those bits should come out of each of these delivery “pipes” exactly the same regardless of the delivery method. We all understand that audio sent over USB sounds different than the same bits sent over coax via S/PDIF or TOSLINK, or a balanced cable, or I 2S over HDMI, or through a CAT5 cable, or WIFI over the home network.īits are bits. We’ve been working, as of late, on a long term project to obviate the differences in digital audio delivery methods.
